SolarEdge

SolarEdge is an Israeli company that develops and markets solar inverters for photovoltaic arrays, power generation monitoring software, battery energy storage products and other related products and services for residential, commercial and industrial applications. Founded in 2006, the company has offices in Germany, Italy and Japan. It also has offices in Germany, Italy, Japan and the USA. It was founded in Delaware. The company was the first to commercialize the Power Optimizer, a device that performs maximum power point tracking (MPPT) at the module level before feeding generated electricity back to a central inverter.

Many solar PV systems use a centralized inverter where panels are connected in series to the human array, feeding all generated DC power to the inverter and converting it into grid-compatible AC power. The main disadvantage of this method is that maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is performed over the entire array, so production is limited to the output of the lowest performing panels. Performance can be affected by shade and weather conditions. SolarEdge solves this problem by placing a small device called a power optimizer behind each solar panel, which performs PMPT at the module level and then feeds the energy to a central inverter. Power Optimizer also enables panel-level monitoring of energy production instead of the generic or string-level data provided by a traditional central inverter.
